Update: Silk City Diner has closed as of April 9, 2006. It is expected to return soon, but no word yet on whether the name (and the bread pudding) will stay the same. A note for young would-be urbanites looking to make the scene: One of your essential duties is to frequent Silk City, the venerable diner/lounge, dance your butt off and then slip next door for (very) late night eats. And what eats they are! An entire menu designed to entice the newly besotted -- comfort foods like meat loaf and french fries, exquisite desserts (you simply must try the chocolate bread pudding at least once in your life) and lots of ice cream confections. For those seeking traditional breakfast materials -- eggs, toast and the like it's all there, plus there are a host of healthier, non-traditional items (eggplant sandwiches, grilled fish) also at your disposal. You'll find all this and a whimsical jukebox spinning out diner classics, surrounded by a fascinating mix of locals, old-timers and kids from Jersey looking to sober up a bit before their long trek back over the bridge.

silk city lost its soul
By pbrcommish1 on 07/22/2007
i knew when it closed over a year ago & i had my last slice of pie that it was probably the last slice and i enjoyed it & was grateful that i came in a couple of days before the rush hit & could quietly eat my sandwich & have coffee & pie in the afternoon.. i know its a little weird how much i lament the loss of silk city...it was just a diner & the food was mediocre. but i found my solace there...it was a piece of time in my life that was stable So it was with great trepidation that i went back, i had read a review that they had re-opened & i was hesitant to go to see what they had done. the first thing i noticed how red it was inside, with all the metal walls the lighting has all aura of the serving counter at a kenny rogers roaster.. the rest of the place has no sense of belonging...they just got new trendier and shinier counter tops and booths...they gave up on the kitch that made it work for so many of us for so long and sold out for a place you can find anywhere kids from jersey want to go to get a $15 pink martini they decided that 2 continentals in town weren't enough, the menu is eerily similar to N 3rd's & the atmosphere feels more like a rockets w/ booze, (am i the only one who is annoyed @ gourmet mac-n-cheese) No more bananas above the back wall...replaced with top shelf liquor & who would need them anyway, there is no banana split on the menu, no pie, no milk shake, only a $6 root beer float that came some assembly required. So there, i have said it...the new silk city has no soul, has no sense of place like home, has no charm, has no food you couldn't find in a dozen other places where the red lights don't mess with your rods & cones.. I ordered the root beer float b/c it would be rude to come in, use the bathroom, look at the menu & leave....so i sat there, ate it & felt sad, Or maybe just that i felt old & that i thought that maybe this is what the trend is & that this is what people want now and that made me even sadder.

I recently heard Silk City is closing. What will I do without your chocolate bread pudding and sweet potato fries? There's always something yummy to be had at Silk City.

Why do they always close the "best" places! The best food, best "diner ambiance", best service, etc. It's been a landmark for years!! Great place!!!
