Known by many as Santa Monica's best if not most beautiful dance spot, Sugar offers weekly entertainment in one of the coolest spaces outside of Hollywood. Guests enter a warehouse-inspired space that takes 20th century minimalism and mixes it with Jetson-type flair. Inside, guests are treated to a visual feast that goes well with the nights of trance and electronica. The theme is translucence, from the bar's counter and chairs to the restrooms that have club kids barely wanting to leave their interiors. Who goes? A hodgepodge of beach types, Hollywood runaways sick of of Sunset, and Santa Monica's legions of European tourists. Sugar manages to make minimalism friendly, whether through its seasoned staff (which also runs the hip, mid-city Liquid Kitty) or the caliber of entertainment, which ranges from danceable to inspirational. Either way, Sugar gives SM an attractive draw that doesn't revolve around beach bands or dive bar. -- Michael Martin
